Buffalo Keeper's House
Built in 1915 the Buffalo Keeper’s House is the oldest building at the Buffalo Ranch and one of four included in the Lamar Buffalo Ranch historic district. As its name suggests this house was home to ranch manager. It is still used by National Park Service Rangers as a residence. Until recently living in this building in the winter was very cold and drafty experience as it sat on a rubble stone foundation with no insulation under the floor. Plumbing below the floor would constantly freeze and residents would have to run water consistently. Mice, ground squirrels, bats and swallows were constant visitors if not residents. Starting in 2016 a complete renovation was undertaken including a new concrete stem wall foundation wall, insulation under the floor, walls and ceiling space, repaired logs and roof, restored historic windows and new double pane storm windows. . The historic windows were reclaimed, and new energy efficient storm windows installed.
