Barry Newton is an Adjunct Professor of Architecture. He was educated in England where he studied at the Hammersmith College of Art and Building, which became Thames Polytechnic and where he obtained both his Undergraduate and Professional degrees. He became a registered Architect in 1973.
He practiced and taught in England prior to1979 when he moved to the United States and taught at Kansas University until 2009 where he is an Emeritus Professor. He has practiced concurrently with teaching and research mainly working on small residential projects.
He has won numerous national and regional awards for Historic Building Documentation [Peterson prize], Historic Building Renovation [Kansas Preservation Alliance] and for Architectural Design [Kansas AIA Award of Excellence] and has been published in a variety of publications [Metropolis, Midgard, Reflections]. He has also won teaching awards [Kemper Foundation].
He currently teaches design studios in the senior years and has given a theory seminar which reflects his interests in architectural typology.
