A native Montanan, raised in a family involved for multiple generations in the construction industry, she decided upon a career path in the field of architecture at the tender age of five. After graduating from the School of Architecture at MSU, Chere left the state to pursue internship and licensure, working for firms in the states of Washington and Colorado. Several years after graduating from MSU, Chere received a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She joined the faculty at the School of Architecture in 2004, where she primarily teaches design studios, at all levels of the curriculum, and graduate seminars. Chere’s teaching interest and focus lies in the analysis and interpretation of place in contemporary environments and how this informs architectural interventions encompassing a multitude of locales from urban to rural. A common theme in Chere’s studios is the exploration of making and process-driven design as a mechanism for students to contemplate their unique voices, in particular as it relates to over arching themes of place and landscape within architectural discourse. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Chere heads an active private practice and is President-Elect of the Montana chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
