Tom was born in Billings, Montana, and raised in eastern Montana and the Willamette valley of Oregon. After graduating from the University of Oregon in 1975 with a BArch, he attained an Architectural License in Oregon in 1979 and later added licenses in Washington, Alaska, and Montana. He practiced architecture for 30 years in the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana working mainly in Commercial, Institutional, and Public arenas with a variety of firms, including his own partnerships in Oregon and Montana for twelve years.
He joined the faculty of the School of Architecture as an Assistant Adjunct Professor in 2005 as Director of the Community Design Center and has also taught Building Construction to Architecture and Construction Engineering Technology Students in that time period. Areas of interest are collaborative project delivery techniques, sustainable design and construction processes, with emphasis on understanding building science and materials as a design tool; LEED training; interdisciplinary project management; integrated project delivery; and public / private partnering on community design projects.
Tom brings a strong background in community service and architectural practice advocacy having served on many community design and advisory committees as well as lobbying on architectural issues in the Oregon and Montana Legislatures. He served as an American Institute of Architects chapter president in Oregon 1986 and Montana 2001.
