In 2007, IDL_Bozeman worked with MMW Architects to maximize daylighting within the atrium space of the Missoula Federal Credit Union. The daylight analysis revealed that without a shading device, direct light would strike an interior conference room wall and cause solar heat gain, as well as visual glare. The lab also promoted daylight diffusion by splaying the ceiling around the skylight.
With the lab's suggestions the credit union is successfully daylit and recieved LEED Platinum certification. Under LEED NC 2.2, the Missoula Federal Credit Union is the first building in Montana to obtain this award.
With the addition of South louvres and a splayed ceiling around the skylight, the lobby is shown as a comfortable space inside the Credit Union. Both additions help to bounce softer, diffuse light throughout the space.
The building also utilized clerestory windows to bounce light from the south to wash the lobby walls. This significantly helped contribute daylight within the atrium space and decrease light contrast throughout the space.
