In 2009, IDL Bozeman worked with Black Box Design to improve artificial lighting conditions at Montana State University's Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. Existing fixtures proved inadequate at many levels including poor overall illumination levels, poor uniformity, and inefficient energy consumption. IDL Bozeman focused primarily on achieving an illumination uniformity standard of 80 fc while reducing overall energy consumption.

We worked within AGI-32 to analyze the best layout, orientation, and aiming angles that were needed to achieve a uniformity of 80 fc throughout the space.  Final recommendations included an 84 fixture metal hallide array with aiming angle and orientation at 45 degrees to decrease down shadow effects.  To achieve uniform illumination, the final solution also utilized 16 fixtures that distribute light evenly across 24 established lighting zones.

We used psuedo color illumination charts to indicate hot spots and non-uniform areas in the space.  The lab tested many different times of the day throughout many times of the year to determine the final recommendation.
