Scholarships
Below is a current list of gifts established through the MSU Alumni Foundation.
Established in 2024.
This scholarship is awarded to a 1st, 2nd or 3rd-year student who is a graduate of a Montana high school from the following counties: Beaverhead, Cascade, Gallatin, Hill, Park or Stillwater. The student must have at least a 3.25 overall GPA. Award: $1000.
Established in 2018.
This award recognizes graphics excellence in design to a current 3rd-year Environmental Design student. Award: $3000 - $3500.
Established in 1970.
These scholarships are presented to outstanding 2nd or 3rd-year students who exhibit good character, above average scholastic ability and participation in AIAS. Award: $1000-$3000, multiple.
Established in 2017.
This scholarship is awarded to a 3rd, 4th or 5th-year student who has defined financial need and who demonstrates excellence in scholarship and design. Award: $1500-$2000.
Established in 1998.
These scholarships are awarded to students participating in School of Architecture study abroad programs including the Rome Studio and MSU Study Abroad. The awards are based on academic merit and achievement. Award: $4000-$6000, multiple.

This scholarship is awarded to a 1st, 2nd or 3rd-year student who demonstrates excellence in design and high financial need. Award: $500-$1000.
Established in 2021.
Awarded to a student pursuing a B.A. in Environmental Design or M. Arch degree who demonstrates financial need and shows good work ethic. Award: $1000.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a 3rd-year international student or 3rd-year student who plans to study abroad in their 4th year and demonstrates promise in the area of architectural design. The donor of this award taught in the School of Architecture on numerous occasions over the last 20 years and is a member of the School of Architecture Advisory Council. Award: $2000-$3000.

This scholarship is awarded to a 1st to 5th-year student who is pursuing a degree in Architecture. The student should be a resident of South Dakota and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Award: $1000-$2000.
Established in 1990.
These awards are given to a 1st to 5th-year School of Architecture student who has at least a 3.0 overall GPA and potential for the profession. Bob Utzinger was Director of the School of Architecture for 10 years and Acting Dean for three years. Upon his retirement an honorary endowment was established in his name. Selection is determined by the members of the School of Architecture Scholarship Committee to recognize excellence and potential. Award: $1000-$3000, multiple.

This scholarship award is provided by the Christy Foundation for retention and recruitment of outstanding students. Recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee and awards are made to students in the 2nd to 5th year of the Architecture program. Award: $500-$2000, multiple.

This scholarship is awarded to a student in the 2nd or 3rd year of the program who demonstrates outstanding capability in the Architecture program. This scholarship was established by CWG Architects in Helena, MT to help support the students of the School of Architecture. Award: $1000.
Established in 2019.
This scholarship was established by Cushing Terrell Design and is awarded to a graduate student who demonstrates excellence and performance in process and design in a studio tied to comprehensive, sustainable and integrative design. Award: $1000-$2000.

The Dean H. C. Rosé Design Award & Scholarship is awarded annually to the outstanding first-year design student. The student is selected based on performance in studio, basic design capability and design studio leadership. The winner is chosen by School of Architecture faculty vote for the 1st-Year Design competition. The award was established in 1996 to celebrate the enthusiasm of a former Dean of the College of Arts and Architecture, a man whose life was rich in achievement yet always focused on nurturing the creativity of young students with a passion for arts and architecture. One of his first loves was teaching first-year design. It was a dream of Dean Rosé to be remembered with a scholarship at Montana State University—a scholarship that recognized the potential in future generations of architects by acknowledging the design talents that make architecture great. Award: $3500-$5000.

This scholarship is awarded to a 3rd, 4th or 5th-year student who has defined financial need and demonstrates excellence in scholarship and design. Award $1000.

The Dowling/Sandholm Architecture Endowment Scholarship was designed for a 3rd or 4th-year architecture student who has graduated from a Montana high school with a 3.5 GPA or higher, and excellent design skills. The donor created this scholarship as part of his advocacy in the architecture field and in support of Montana youth. The donor grew up in Montana and is a MSU School of Architecture graduate of 1989. Award: $1000-$2000.

This endowment was established to create scholarships that are awarded to full-time students in the 1st-4th years of the program who demonstrate a strong academic record. The student must have at least a 3.0 GPA or higher and be a graduate of a Montana High School. The donor's intention for this scholarship is to have a large financial impact on in-state students. Students are selected by the School of Architecture Scholarship Committee on the basis of overall GPA and potential for the profession as evidenced by architecture studio GPA. Award: $6000-$8000, multiple.

This scholarship is awarded to a 3rd-year architecture student on a competitive basis for foreign travel during the fourth year of the program. The general process is to apply for the Woods Prize in 3rd, travel during 4th, and share the experience with peers during the 5th year. The purpose of the Woods Prize in Architecture is to create an opportunity for students of architecture at Montana State University to experience the incomparable educational rewards of foreign travel to allow the time and the incentive for critical reflection upon what one sees and to share what one learns and experiences from traveling abroad. Award: $4000-$6000.

This scholarship is awarded to a 2nd, 3rd or 4th-year Environmental Design student who is a graduate of a Montana high school from Cascade, Chouteau, Fergus, Glacier, Hill, Judith Basin, Liberty, Meagher, Pondera or Teton counties. This scholarship also recognizes excellence in design. Award: $1000-$2000.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a 3rd-year student who plans to study abroad in their 4th year and demonstrates excellence in design. This award was established by family, friends, students and colleagues of Henry Sorenson who was a long-time faculty member in the School of Architecture and passed away in 2022. Henry taught hand graphics and led many School of Architecture Study Abroad programs across the world. Henry highly valued any opportunity to travel and sketch. Award: $1000-$1500.

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time 2nd-year School of Architecture student who has shown outstanding capability in the School. Hugo Eck taught at Montana State from 1946 until his retirement in 1979. During that time, he enriched the lives of many students and colleagues. Hugo’s loyalty to and faith in the School of Architecture was unshakable. His generous nature and concern for others made him a special friend. His interest in inventing better ways of designing and building made him a special teacher. The School of Architecture lost a good friend when he passed away in 1988. Award: $500-$1000.

This scholarship is awarded to a student who shows outstanding capability, good character, demonstrates potential for the profession, and is highly respected by their peers. Award $500-$1000.

This scholarship is awarded to a worthy upcoming 3rd or 4th-year architecture student with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. It recognizes excellent scholarship, capability and promise in the profession. Award: $3500-$4000.
Established in 1997.
This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th-year of the program who demonstrates a strong academic record and is a graduate of a Montana High School. Ivan Leigland was a 1966 graduate of the MSU School of Architecture. He was the 1995 AIA Montana President. He had a passion for architecture, architecture students and auto racing. Award: $1000-$2000.

The Jon R. Jurgens Scholarship Endowment is designed for architecture students who have excellent graphic communication design skills. This scholarship is awarded to a student in the 3rd, 4th or 5th-year of the program. Jon (Randy) R. Jurgens, President of Jon R. Jurgens & Associates, Inc. in Portland, Oregon, encourages traditional graphics skills, along with contemporary computer skills to communicate excellence in design. Randy grew up in Montana and is a MSU School of Architecture graduate of 1972. Award: $2000-$2500.

This scholarship is awarded to a 3rd, 4th or 5th-Year School of Architecture student who has exhibited strong leadership skills and civic participation. The donor, Doug Bailey, was the national AIAS President in 1989-90. He graduated from the School of Architecture in 1991. Award: $1500.

This scholarship was established by Locati Architects in Bozeman, MT. It is awarded to an outstanding 4th or 5th-year student of the Architecture program who displays promise for the profession, professionalism and excellent design ability. Award: $2500-$3000.

This scholarship was established by Locati Architects in Bozeman, MT. It is awarded to an outstanding full-time student in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the Architecture program who demonstrates tremendous design talent and passion for architecture and the profession. The student should exhibit an innate love and understanding of design. The recipient should also have excellent oral communication and presentation skills. Award: $1000-$4000, multiple.

This scholarship is awarded to a non-traditional student in the 1st to 5th year of the School of Architecture and has returned to school to pursue architecture. This scholarship is given in memory of Herb Agocs, a wrestling coach, who always wished he had been able to return to school to study architecture. Award: $1000-$1500.

This scholarship is awarded to a 3rd, 4th or 5th-year School of Architecture student who is a Montana resident, member of AIAS MSU Chapter, and demonstrates outstanding capability in the Architecture program. Award: $1000.
Established in 1981.
This scholarship is awarded to a 4th or 5th-year architecture student who graduated from a Montana, Wyoming or Alaska high school and demonstrates outstanding composite capability including leadership and potential for the architectural profession while enrolled in the Architecture program. Award: $3000-$4000.

This scholarship is awarded to an 3rd-year architecture student with a minimum GPA of a 2.5 and financial need. The student should be a resident of Montana with preference given to those from the Highline area between Kalispell and Wolf Point. This scholarship was established to honor Merlyn Miller, a 1974 graduate of the MSU School of Architecture. Merlyn practiced architecture in Billings, MT and had a strong commitment to the state. The scholarship reflects his commitment to the profession and to the State of Montana by supporting a student resident of Montana who wishes to stay in the state for future practice. Award: $1000-$2000.

This scholarship is awarded to a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th-year student who was a graduate of a Montana high school and shows promise for the profession as evidenced by overall GPA and excellence in design. Award: $1000.

This scholarship is awarded each year to a student who is in the 2nd or 3rd year of the Architecture program. The student should demonstrate an excellence in design studios. Other criteria considered include volunteer work and research, general interests and activities. This award was established by Mosaic Architecture in Helena, MT. Award: $1500.

These scholarships are awarded to full-time students in the 1st to 5th year of the program who demonstrate a strong academic and service record. The student must have at least a 3.0 GPA or higher and be a graduate of a Montana High School. These scholarships are offered in honor of George Nachtsheim and Arthur Nordling, founding principals of Integrus Architecture. Award: $1000-$2000, multiple.

This scholarship is presented to a 4th or 5th-year student in memory of Pamela J. Hill. Pamela was a faculty member of the School of Architecture, Vice Provost of Outreach and Summer Session at Montana State University as well as a tireless and enthusiastic advocate for women in both architectural education and the profession. It is awarded to an outstanding student who represents those same ideals, values, and passion. Award: $1000-$2000.

These scholarships are awarded to full-time students in the 2nd year of the program who demonstrate design excellence. Design excellence is determined by full faculty review and vote of ARCH 254 projects each Spring semester. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards are given. Award: $500-$1500, multiple.

This scholarship is awarded to a Native American, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian student enrolled in the Environmental Design program who demonstrates design talent and promise for the profession. Award: $1500-$2000.
Established in 2017.
This scholarship is awarded to a student in the 2nd to 5th year of the program, is a Montana Resident that demonstrates design potential and has documented financial need. This scholarship was established to honor the memory of local architect Richard D. Stevens. Award: $1000.
Established in 2020.
The family of Robert and LaDonna Fehlberg established this scholarship in honor and memory of their parents. Robert ("Fehl") received his B.S. in Architecture from Montana State College in 1951. He earned his master's from the School of Architecture in 2014. During his career he dedicated many hours of expertise to promoting the emerging arts community throughout Montana. He led both the Montana Institute of Arts and the Montana Arts Foundation. He also provided vision and architectural design for the creation of the Yellowstone Art Museum, the Miles City Art Center, & others. Fehl and his wife LaDonna were some of the first recipients of the Montana Governor's Award for the Arts. It is in honor of his lifelong commitment to creating a better world through architecture and the arts that this scholarship has been created. This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student pursuing the Master of Architecture degree who exhibits outstanding architectural design and actively participates in the arts. Recipient must also be a graduate of a Montana high school. Award: $1500.
Established in 1967.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a 4th-year student in architecture to recognize ability and promise in architectural design to use in the graduate year of the program. The award was made possible in 1967, through a perpetual endowment fund established to honor Robert Rea Esgar, F.A.I.A., a Chicago architect and 1927 graduate of Montana State College Department of Architecture. Esgar was given top recognition by his profession, being named a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects. The citation states that the award was made due to “Esgar’s notable contribution to the advancement to the profession and because of his achievements in design and in service to the profession.” Award: $1000-$2000.

This scholarship is awarded to a 2nd to 5th-year School of Architecture student who is a graduate of a Montana High School, demonstrates financial need and is making satisfactory progress towards completion of their degree from the School of Architecture. Award: $1000-$2000.

Criteria are design excellence, participation in the School of Architecture community and retention of promising students. Funding for these scholarships is made possible by the annual MSU Alumni Association Phone-a-thon. Open to all School of Architecture students. Award: $1000, multiple.
Established in 1979.
The recipient of this award must be a full-time student in the third year of the Architecture program, has an overall GPA of at least a 2.75, is of good character, shows outstanding capability, demonstrates potential promise for the profession, and is respected by their fellow students and faculty. Students who attended the MSU School of Architecture from 1964 through 1978 received guidance and instruction from the School of Architecture’s secretary, Shirlie White. After having served three directors in her fourteen-year stint as head secretary, Shirlie retired in August 1978. The Shirlie White Scholarship is given in her name for her many contributions to the School of Architecture. Award: $1500-$2500.

This scholarship is awarded to a student in the 3rd to 5th year of the program who had a rural upbringing, currently has at least a 3.0 GPA, is involved in community service, and works while attending Montana State University. Award: $1000.

This scholarship is awarded to a student in the 2nd to 5th year of the School of Architecture who has at least a 3.0 GPA, demonstrates leadership skills, has artistic talents, volunteer or community services experience and demonstrates financial need. Award: $1000.

The Steven Kwok and Margaret Fitzgerald Family Scholarship is awarded to a 2nd to 4th-year student pursuing an undergraduate degree in Environmental Design who is defined by Montana State University as a non-traditional student. Award: $2000-$3000.

This scholarship is awarded to a student who is pursuing a degree from the School of Architecture with at least a 3.50 overall GPA. Award: $2000.
Established in 2013.
This award is given to a 2nd to 5th year School of Architecture student who is a full-time, in-state student maintaining a 3.2 overall GPA and demonstrating design talent and a passion for Architecture. Award: $1000-$1500.
Established in 2017.
This scholarship is awarded to a student in the 2nd to 5th year of the School of Architecture. This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates academic excellence and promise for the profession.
In addition to the above endowed scholarships, other scholarships are provided by individuals and organizations as annual scholarships.
